International Youth Day 2023 "Green Skills For Youth: Towards A Sustainable World"

UN Photo/Logan Abassi

Today, the world is embarking on a green transition. The shift towards an environmentally sustainable and climate-friendly world is critical not only for responding to the global climate crisis but also for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). A successful transition towards a greener world will depend on the development of green skills in the population. Green skills are “knowledge, abilities, values and attitudes needed to live in, develop and support a sustainable and resource-efficient society”.

UN Photo/Mark Garten

These include technical knowledge and skills that enable the effective use of green technologies and processes in occupational settings, as well as transversal skills that draw on a range of knowledge, values and attitudes to facilitate environmentally sustainable decisions in work and in life. Due to their interdisciplinary nature, the essence of green skills is sometimes expressed, partly if not wholly, through other associated terms such as “skills for the future” and “skills for green jobs”. While green skills are relevant for people of all ages, they have heightened importance for younger people, who can contribute to the green transition for a longer period of time.

IFRC:Africa Hunger Crisis Demands Urgent Humanitarian Action

Sub-Saharan Africa is currently grappling with one of the most severe food crises in decades, affecting millions of vulnerable people across the region. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) is responding to this urgent call for humanitarian assistance by launching a regional Emergency Appeal to address the acute food insecurity and protect the lives, livelihoods, and prospects of approximately 7.7 million people.

The factors contributing to this crisis are both local and global in nature, including:

- Insecurity and Armed Conflict: Prolonged conflicts and violence in several countries have disrupted food production and distribution systems, leaving communities in a perpetual state of vulnerability.
- Extreme Weather Events and Climate Variability: The region has been grappling with irregular weather patterns, recurrent droughts, and floods, adversely impacting agricultural activities and food availability.
- Negative Macroeconomic Impacts: Economic challenges, exacerbated by the global pandemic and other external factors, have hindered access to food and basic necessities for vulnerable populations.

The Situation in Numbers:

  • 23 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa are on the IFRC watch list for the hunger crisis.
  • Red Cross Red Crescent's emergency appeal covers 16 countries, aiming to provide assistance to reach 7.7 million people.
  • The number of food-insecure people in the Sahel has quadrupled between 2015 and 2022 to 30 million people.
  • 1 out of 3 children under the age of five in SSA is anemic due to poor diets.
  • 2 out of 5 women of childbearing age in SSA are anemic due to poor diets.

IFRC's Response and Achievements:

  • So far, 1.55 million people have been reached with critical aid.
  • 600,000 people received cash voucher assistance through multipurpose cash grants.
  • 232,000 people received livelihoods support and training in income-generating activities and livestock production.
  • 425,000 people received health and nutrition support, including child supplementary feeding.
  • 1,200,000 people received water, sanitation, and hygiene assistance.

Countries Highlighted in the Emergency Appeal:

The IFRC's emergency appeal is focusing on the following countries: Angola, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Djibouti, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Kenya, Madagascar, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Mauritania and Zimbabwe.

Current Funding Status:

To date, CHF 56 million has been funded, covering 26% of the required amount. However, there is still a significant funding gap that needs to be addressed urgently.

IFRC today seeks CHF 215 million to support 16 Red Cross Red Crescent National Societies in Africa respond to the hunger crisis.

7.7 million people will receive aid in the form of cash assistance, food and nutrition and water, sanitation and hygiene.

Niger: Guterres concerned about health and safety of detained

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has voiced concern about the reported “deplorable living conditions” of the President of Niger in arbitrary detention, his spokesperson said in a note to journalists published on Wednesday evening.

President Mohamed Bazoum and his family are believed to be living without electricity, water, food or medicine, according to media reports.

Release detained leader

The democratically elected leader has been detained since soldiers seized power on 26 July.

"The Secretary-General reiterates his concern for the health and safety of the President and his family and once again calls for his immediate and unconditional release and reinstatement as head of state," the note said.

Mr. Guterres was also alarmed over continuing reports about the arrest of several members of the Government and urgently called for their unconditional release.

Mediation efforts continue

The UN supports mediation efforts by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) towards restoring constitutional order in Niger.

The regional bloc was meeting in Abuja, Nigeria, on Thursday to again discuss the crisis.

This follows an extraordinary summit held there on 30 July, where leaders issued a communiqué that called for President Bazoum to be returned to power within a week of the meeting.

ECOWAS had threatened to “take all measures necessary to restore constitutional order”, including use of force, and the ultimatum has since expired.

Supporting vulnerable people

The UN fears the crisis in Niger could impact the wider West African region and continues to underscore the need to ensure ongoing humanitarian support to some 4.3 million people in the country.

This week, the World Food Programme (WFP) assisted more than 12,000 people in the Maradi region in south-central Niger, UN deputy spokesperson Farhan Haq said on Thursday.

Heavy rains and floods continue across the country which have affected some 38,000 people since June, and the Government and aid organizations are ramping up efforts to support them.

"Humanitarian partners are struggling with low stocks of supplies, due to the impact of closures of the border and the air space. This situation may affect food assistance for 2.8 million people in the coming months," said Mr. Haq.

He added that the UN has obtained authorizations from the de facto authorities to carry out four flights by the UN Humanitarian Air Services (UNHAS) from the capital, Niamey, to Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, to temporarily relocate 49 family dependents.

UNHAS flights had been temporarily suspended following the attempted coup in Niger because the air space was closed, along with  territorial borders.

Colombia: Guterres welcomes start of ceasefire between Government and ELN

UN Secretary-General António Guterres congratulated the Government of Colombia and the National Liberation Army (ELN) on the start of their bilateral ceasefire which entered into force on Thursday, his spokesperson said in a statement.

The six-month truce between the authorities and the largest remaining rebel group in the country followed 10 months of negotiations and marks the next step in an ongoing peace process.

“By adhering to the ceasefire in good faith and with a clear commitment to alleviating the suffering of civilians, the parties can significantly reduce violence while enhancing trust at the peace table,” the statement said.

The Secretary-General also praised the establishment of the National Participation Committee, launched in tandem with the ceasefire.

Peace efforts advancing

He underlined the UN’s readiness “to support the critically important work of the National Participation Committee in facilitating the inclusive participation of Colombian society in the peace process.”

“Colombia’s persistent efforts to expand peace through dialogue are advancing,” the UN chief said, urging the international community to support these initiatives both politically and through support for the implementation of agreements.

The UN Verification Mission in Colombia will monitor the ceasefire, following the unanimous adoption of a resolution by the Security Council on Wednesday, which also authorized the deployment of up to 68 additional international observers.

“In accordance with the mandate given to it yesterday by the Security Council, the Verification Mission is ready to do its part in the monitoring and verification of the ceasefire,” the statement said.

The UN Mission was established following the signing of the 2016 Peace Agreement between the Colombian Government and the FARC rebel group, which ended more than 50 years of civil war.

The ELN and another group, EMC, did not sign onto the accord.

The Security Council also expressed willingness to consider mandating the UN Mission to monitor a ceasefire with EMC “when the Secretary-General confirms a ceasefire including appropriate verification protocols has been reached”.
