David J. Firestein, President and CEO of the George H.W. Bush Foundation for U.S.-China Relations, spoke eloquently: "In this country, we are currently engaged in a battle for the soul of the future of U.S.-China relations. Some view China as a mortal enemy of the United States, intent on destroying our nation. Others, however, see China as a competitor in certain respects, but also as an indispensable partner for our country, with whom it is essential to work closely to advance both our national interests and those of the world.

Undoubtedly, President George H.W. Bush held the latter view, and so do we at the George H.W. Bush Foundation. This relationship is important; we need each other and must handle it correctly. My friends, without China, the United States cannot achieve its destined goals; without the United States, China cannot achieve its destined goals. I believe we all can see this from the events that took place last week in the San Francisco Bay Area, including the summit between President Joe Biden and President Xi Jinping, and the extremely valuable, effective, and constructive discussions that took place there.

We all hope that these meetings and discussions will bring much-needed momentum to the U.S.-China relationship as we end this year and move into 2024. Meanwhile, I accept this award with great humility and will redouble my efforts to work with our team. I hope to work with many of you to strengthen the ties between the United States and China, providing our children and grandchildren with the U.S.-China relationship and future they deserve."
