Host Margaret visited the UN News Center pleasant conversation with the President of U.S. ATN News

Editor’s Note from Celebrity Media: On November 6, taking advantage of the free time after the end of the meeting of the United Nations Department of Public Information, we visited the United Nations News Center under the leadership of the President of United Nations American Television News, and had a pleasant conversation with him there.

In a conversation with host Margaret, Ahmed Fathi, the President of American Television News (ATN) in the United States, discussed the role of television journalists at the United Nations headquarters and their contributions to helping the international community understand the work of different governments. The President of ATN News in the United States mentioned the number of journalists accredited at the United Nations News Center. The President of ATN News in the United States has a good reputation, and his news reports are objective and fair, including those living in Hong Kong. He thinks Hong Kong is expensive, but he likes it personally. Hong Kong is the best place for English speakers in Asia.

The President of ATN News in the United States recalled his visit to Beijing and another city’s train station by high-speed train. He talked about his experience of visiting train stations in China: “We went to the station in Beijing, my God, it’s bigger than the airport, yes, it’s a very big train station, and it’s very new, modern, and clean.” Beijing is too big, making people feel uncomfortable and a bit stressed.

The President of ATN News in the United States compared the size of train stations and airports in northern New York State with the size of train stations in different countries with host Margaret, emphasizing the grandeur and spectacle of Chinese stations.

Hopes for a sustainable planet must not ‘melt away’: Guterres

Secretary-General António Guterres briefs reporters on the climate crisis following his recent travel to Chile and Antarctica.UN Photo/Eskinder Debebe Secretary-General António Guterres briefs reporters on the climate crisis following his recent travel to Chile and Antarctica.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres was briefing reporters in New York after seeing for himself over the weekend the “profoundly shocking” speed at which ice is melting in Antarctica – three times faster than the rate in the early 1990s.

New figures reveal that sea ice at the South Pole is now 1.5 million square kilometres below average for this time of year; that’s equal to the combined surface area of Portugal, Spain, France and Germany combined.

Nowhere to hide

“What happens in Antarctica doesn’t stay in Antarctica”, Mr. Guterres said. “We live in an interconnected world. Melting sea ice means rising seas. And that directly endangers lives and livelihoods in coastal communities across the globe.

He noted that it’s not just the impact of floods and saltwater on food and water supplies at stake, but the viability of small islands and entire cities on coasts across the world.

“The movement of waters around Antarctica distributes heat, nutrients and carbon around the world, helping to regulate our climate and regional weather patterns”, he told correspondents outside the Security Council.

“But that system is slowing as the southern Ocean grows warmer and less dense. Further slowdown – or entire breakdown – would spell catastrophe.”

‘Calamitous’ rise

With no let-up in fossil fuel extraction “we’re heading towards a calamitous three-degree Celsius temperature rise by the end of the century”, he warned.

:If we continue as we are, and I strongly hope we will not, the Greenland and West Antarctica ice sheets will cross a deadly tipping point.”

This represents an astonishing rise of around 10 metres.

The vicious cycle means accelerated heating as ice diminishes and more extreme weather.

At COP28 in Dubai, which starts later this week, “leaders must break this cycle”, the UN chief declared.

The solutions are there

“The solutions are well known. Leaders must act to limit global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius, protect people from climate chaos, and end the fossil fuel age.”

Only a global pact to triple renewable energy use, a doubling in energy efficiency and access to clean power for all by 2030, will be sufficient, he argued.

“Antarctica is crying out for action”, the Secretary-General added. “I salute the thousands of researchers – in Antarctica and around the world – expanding our understanding of the changes taking place on the continent.

“They are testament to human ingenuity and the immense benefits of international collaboration. Leaders must not let the hopes of people around the world for a sustainable planet melt away.”

In visit to Antarctica, Guterres appeals for action to end ‘climate anarchy’

Antarctica has been called the sleeping giant, but it is now being awoken by climate chaos, the UN Secretary-General has warned.

António Guterres is in Antarctica this week, where he saw first-hand how climate change is impacting the world’s southernmost continent, which is mostly covered in ice.

The heat is on

“Fossil fuel pollution is heating our planet, unleashing climate anarchy in Antarctica,” said Mr. Guterres, adding that the Southern Ocean has taken the majority of the heat from global warming.

That means ice is melting into the ocean at record rates. Melting ice means sea levels rising at record rates," he explained.

"That directly endangers the lives and livelihoods of people in coastal communities across the globe. It means homes are no longer insurable. And it threatens the very existence of some small island States.”

Unleashing catastrophe worldwide

Antarctic sea ice is at an all-time low.  New figures show that this September, it was 1.5 million square kilometers smaller than the average for the time of year – “an area roughly the size of Portugal, Spain, France and Germany combined.”

Mr. Guterres noted that the Greenland ice sheet is also melting fast, losing over 250 gigatons of ice every year.

“All of this spells catastrophe around the world. What happens in Antarctica doesn’t stay in Antarctica. And what happens thousands of miles away has a direct impact right here,” he said.

Limit temperature rise

The Secretary-General appealed for world leaders attending the COP28 climate change conference in Dubai next week to act now to limit global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius.

He also urged them to protect people from climate chaos, and end the fossil fuel age, saying “we must not let all hopes for a sustainable planet melt away.’

David J. Firestein, President and CEO of the George H.W. Bush Foundation for U.S.-China Relations, spoke eloquently: "In this country, we are currently engaged in a battle for the soul of the future of U.S.-China relations. Some view China as a mortal enemy of the United States, intent on destroying our nation. Others, however, see China as a competitor in certain respects, but also as an indispensable partner for our country, with whom it is essential to work closely to advance both our national interests and those of the world.

Undoubtedly, President George H.W. Bush held the latter view, and so do we at the George H.W. Bush Foundation. This relationship is important; we need each other and must handle it correctly. My friends, without China, the United States cannot achieve its destined goals; without the United States, China cannot achieve its destined goals. I believe we all can see this from the events that took place last week in the San Francisco Bay Area, including the summit between President Joe Biden and President Xi Jinping, and the extremely valuable, effective, and constructive discussions that took place there.

We all hope that these meetings and discussions will bring much-needed momentum to the U.S.-China relationship as we end this year and move into 2024. Meanwhile, I accept this award with great humility and will redouble my efforts to work with our team. I hope to work with many of you to strengthen the ties between the United States and China, providing our children and grandchildren with the U.S.-China relationship and future they deserve."
